Rise of Ottoman Empire through the lens of most inspiring Turkish TV serial – Dirilis Ertugrul.

By Ahmad Jawad

Dirilis Ertugrul is the most inspiring Turkish TV Serial and so far being watched in 60 countries of the world.

The serial is not only a window to the great history of Suleyman Shah and his son Ertugrul which became foundation to the rise of Ottoman Empire, it’s also a complete journey of Islamic values. The events of TV Serial can be correlated with current events in Syria and Islamic world.

Turkey is doing what United States has been doing since 80 years to write history through movies and serials to inspire its generations.

To me Tayyip Erdogan can be seen as Ertugrul Ghazi of today’s modern times.

Dirilis Ertugrul is a must watch TV serial for every Muslim to know the greatness of Islam under Ottoman Empire. TV Serial is at par with with Hollywood TV Serials. Very strong script, outstanding acting, top class action scenes, fast pace and beautiful locations is all about Diliris Ertugrul.

Let’s have some basic understanding on the history of rise of Ottoman Empire.

Ottoman Empire was named after its first ruler Osman Ghazi which is commonly spoken as “Sultanatay Osmania” in our language.

Ertugrul, Father of Osman Ghazi, is the real hero behind rise of Ottoman Empire. Ertugrul father was Suleiman Shah. Turkey’s only small piece of land outside Turkey is the tomb of suleyman shah.

The tomb of Suleyman Shah, the grandfather of the Ottoman Empire founder, was moved from its Turkish enclave in Syria, but what is the significance of his tomb?

Turkish troops entered Syria in the dead of night on Saturday to destroy the current tomb of Suleyman Shah and move the precious shrine to a safer place at Esme region of Aleppo.

The operation was carried out by nearly 600 soldiers to also evacuate the 38 guards – one soldier was killed in an accident during the military operation.

The evident planning and care taken to rescue the guards – in an operation called Shah Euphrates – and protect the tomb reflects the value Turkey has in this shrine.

Who was Suleyman Shah?

Suleyman Shah is believed to have lived from 1178 until 1236 and the Turkic tribal leader is the grandfather of Osman I, the founder of the Ottoman Empire which lasted for six centuries. Turkey became a republic after the War of Liberation in 1923.

Shah is the father of Ertuğrul Ghazi, who in turn is the father of Osman I, the empire’s first sultan and after whom the empire, which began in the 13th century, was called (Osman means Ottoman in Turkish).

The Kayi tribe was a branch of the Oghuzs who migrated from east to west and ended up in Anatolia, central Turkey, during the Seljuq period. Shah was a 12th century military leader of the Seljuk Empire, one of the first Turkish groups to settle in Anatolia.

in 1921, the Treaty of Ankara signed by Turkey and France granted the former the land surrounding the tomb as well as the tomb itself. During this period, Syria was under French rule.

In March 2014, Abdullah Gul, Turkey’s former president, said: “Our sole piece of land outside our homeland is this. It will be protected the way our homeland is protected. It’s Turkey’s land and it will have its flag there. I want everybody to know this.”

However, the mausoleum has been moved previously in 1974 about 50 miles (80km) to the north when the tomb was flooded because of the construction of a new dam and a reservoir called Lake Assad.
